Holland Festival

The Holland Festival is one of the best and most visionary arts festivals in the world. I am honoured indeed to be invited to perform there a second time--and am really thrilled and excited to be collaboratiing with such talented Dutch artists as Reza Namavar and the Cameleon Ensemble.

We had the pleasure of attending several events and performances at the 2007 edition of the Holland Festival. We were based in Berlin for most of that year and before returning to Australia both of us had the opportunity to experience, compare and contrast most of the major European art festivals. And without doubt, from a non-European perspective, the Holland Festival has a clear leadership position. For myself I would regard it as being amongst the top three in Europe. Put simply, the programming of the festival presents a rigorous mix of major cultural figures and their work, in combination with new investigations into form and arts innovation. There is a clear assertion of international standards being created, not just aspired to.

Het Holland Festival inspireert Nederlandse en andere kunstenaars om buiten de grenzen te denken. En het publiek reist met hen mee. Het is een van de belangrijkste evenementen van het Culturele Jaar.

Geniet dubbel: word begunstiger zoals ik.

In juni ga ik nooit met vakantie. Dan reis ik cultureel, in mijn theaterstoel. Bij het HF. Aan het eind van de maand heb ik meer van de wereld gezien.

Je suis très heureux et impatient de ces concerts à Amsterdam et c’est un grand honneur pour moi d'être joué dans le plus célèbre festival d’Europe. Le Holland Festival a acquis une renommée si grande et si visionnaire dans ses choix que j'en nourris presque un syndrome de culpabilité! J'espère être digne de la confiance qui m'est offerte si généreusement.

We gaan al ruim 35 jaar naar het HF en hebben dus alle formules al eens meegemaakt. Wat hetzelfde blijft is dat feestje in juni waarin je altijd iets bijzonders kan meemaken. Over 35 jaar zijn we er waarschijnlijk niet meer, het HF hopelijk wel.

Wandering through the program of this festival it feels as an honor being asked to push new flemish music into the spotlights at this fabulous stage. It felt logical to play also the monumental Shiraz composition by Claude Vivier: its fierce, optimistic believe in the universality of differing cultures by trying to show next to eachother the benefits of it, that seems to me also what this festival is aiming for. (About Pascal Dusapin and her role in the his opera Passion, HF 2009) Having spent months learning this role, having performed it many times, and now revisiting it for HF 2009, I am struck with how, each time, each phrase that Dusapin created is so fresh, so full of possibility. He challenges me with his writing, to be him, to be his voice and remain myself, to remain myself and to go far away from what I can consciously understand, to give up on understanding and just SING and trust that it is enough. And it is! I am very grateful to him for every note of this opera, every note of both the voices and the orchestra.

Recht op risico: Niet voor niets bracht het Holland Festival een eerbetoon aan de baanbrekende componist Edgard Varèse. De krampachtige angst voor het vreemde van deze tijd werkt beperkend en beklemmend en legt het risico van vernieuwing lam. En daarmee ook de kunst. De Veenfabriek heeft een risicovolle structuur. We zijn flexibel en bereid om op ieder moment te reageren, van planning te veranderen, belangwekkende thema’s aan te pakken en het vreemde te omarmen. Dat geldt ook voor het Holland Festival dat ons ook in 2009 de ruimte heeft gegeven voor een spannende onderneming: Kristal, een concertant portret over Edgard Varèse met het sireneorkest op de vijver van het Westergasterrein.

Het Holland Festival bruist, prikkelt en probeert uit. Het is geweldig om altijd weer op zoek te kunnen naar de meest hoogwaardige en vooruitstrevende technieken, op het hoogste artistieke niveau. Een feest om aan mee te werken. Stichting inexcelsisvideo was betrokken bij de filmproducties van After Life (2006), La Commedia (2008), Varèse 360˚(2009) en A Tribute to Oum Kalthoum (2010). De opening van het Holland Festival 2006 met mijn opera 'After Life' was een beslissend moment in mijn carriere. Fantastisch dat Pierre Audi jonge makers dit soort kansen geeft!
