Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande opened the festival, but in an unusual form directed by Peter Sellars and with star conductor Simon Rattle, who would go on to conduct Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette later in the festival. American music by Steve Reich and composers succeeding him featured prominently on the programme. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker was the central choreographer with her choreographies, but also films with and by her. Speaking of films: the Tuschinski theatre screened early Technicolor films from the 1920s to John Ford’s She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, while Soeterijntheater hosted a programme about Indonesian film.
