Archive 1996

On the cusp of an era’s end and the festival’s 50th anniversary in 1997, the 1996 edition was all about looking back. Two major artists from the later 20th century featured prominently with retrospectives of old and new work: composer Pierre Boulez and choreographer William Forsythe. As part of the Year of the Ensembles, the festival asked twenty composers to write works that were first performed this year. Guy Cassiers adapted Marguerite Duras’ Hiroshima mon Amour into a theatre piece, while Enescu’s life work Oedipe was performed for the first time in the Netherlands.
