Archive 2003

The 2003 festival featured many big names, from Trisha Brown to Barbara Sukowa, and from Reinbert de Leeuw to the Wooster Group. Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös adapted Jean Genet’s scabrous Le Balcon into an opera that opened the festival. Director Christoph Marthaler with Schauspielhaus Zürich and dance innovator Trisha Brown with her company each in their own way interpreted Schubert’s songs. Two other dance innovators, Pina Bausch and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, were also featured at the festival with two pieces each. Major theatre texts by Ibsen, Chekhov and Racine underwent oftentimes radical reinterpretations by the likes of Thomas Ostermeier (Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz), Ivo van Hove (TGA) and Liz Lecomte with her Wooster Group. Furthermore, two directors from the Argentinian avant-garde made an appearance in the Netherlands for the first time.
