Robert Wilson, Nederlands Dans Theater III
Ruud Jonkers
2005 was the first year of artistic director Pierre Audi, as well as the year when Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ opened its doors. As such, this edition featured lots of music and musical theatre with no less than five works by Arvo Pärt, the Estonian composer of sacred music, the world premiere of L’Amour de Loin by Kaija Saariaho, Bach cantatas, but also Sufi music and a solo concert by Laurie Anderson. Big names from the theatre world were also present, like Johan Simons with his and Schauspielhaus Zürich’s adaptation of Houellebecq’s controversial novel The Elementary Particles. Grandmaster Peter Brook returned to the festival for the first time since 1994 with Tierno Bokar, an African tale of violence and tolerance.
