Alvin Lucier
Profile
Alvin Lucier (1931–2021) was an American composer and sound artist, celebrated as a pioneer of experimental and minimalist music. He taught for many years at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and was a member of the influential Sonic Arts Union with Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma. His work explores the physical properties of sound and the act of listening itself.
His best-known piece, I Am Sitting in a Room (1969), involves recording and re-recording his own spoken text until speech dissolves into the resonant frequencies of the room. Other key works include Music for Solo Performer (1965), Music on a Long Thin Wire (1977), and Still and Moving Lines of Silence in Families of Hyperbolas (1973–74). Lucier remained active as an artist and teacher in Middletown, Connecticut, until his death in 2021.
