Caroline Guiela Nguyen (Poissy, 1981) is a French author, theatre director and filmmaker. After studying sociology and performing arts at the University of Nice, she joined Group 37 of the École supérieure d’art dramatique in Strasbourg in 2005, specializing in directing and dramaturgy, where she graduated in 2008.
Nguyen achieved international breakthrough in 2017 with SAIGON, which toured until 2020 in some fifteen countries, including France, Germany, Sweden, China, Australia and Vietnam. In 2021, she created FRATERNITÉ, conte fantastique at the Festival d’Avignon. This was followed in 2022 by Kindheitsarchive [Enfance-Archive] in Berlin, and in 2024 by Lacrima in Strasbourg. The creation of Valentina is scheduled for 2025.
Today, Nguyen is associated with the Odéon – Théâtre de l’Europe, the Schaubühne in Berlin, the Théâtre National de Bretagne in Rennes, the MC2 in Grenoble and the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. In September 2023, she was appointed director of the Théâtre National de Strasbourg, succeeding Stanislas Nordey.
Caroline Guiela Nguyen has been named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2016) and Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite (2023). She has also received the Grand Prix Italia (2016) and the Prix SACD Nouveau Talent Théâtre (2018). Her work has been nominated several times for the Molières.
