• Intent to reschedule for Holland Festival 2023
It is with a heavy heart that the Holland Festival must report that the spectacular film installation Euphoria from Julian Rosefeldt will not be coming to Amsterdam in June 2022.
The world premiere of the new film installation from Julian Rosefeldt, Euphoria, had been planned as an anniversary piece in the programme of the 75th edition of the Holland Festival. Rosefeldt was previously featured at the festival with the successful Manifesto (2017) with actress Cate Blanchett. Because Rosefeldt, who lives in Berlin, has worked together with a Ukrainian film crew in Kiev for a long time, the current, deeply tragic situation there affects this production. In response to the increased threat from Russia, filming was halted shortly before the war broke out. This production, which requires a tremendous amount of preparation, will not be completed in time for the Holland Festival in June as a consequence. In consultation with the artist, the producer, The Park Avenue Armory in New York, has unfortunately had to cancel the installation for the coming Holland Festival. Our intention is to show Euphoria anyway at the Holland Festival in 2023.
About Euphoria
Euphoria is about the unbridled consumerism in our society. In music and film, supporters and opponents of capitalism are given a platform, and both the ‘euphoric’ and destructive sides of consumerism are made tangible. Audiences would have been able to visit the world premiere of this installation for seventeen days at the Central Market Hall, in a 90-minute ‘walk’. In this spectacular new film installation, texts about economy and capitalism are spoken and sung in a performance by acclaimed international actors, dancers and a hundred and fifty singers from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. Further whipping things up are celebrated contemporary jazz drummers, including Terri Lyne Carrington and Steve Gadd.
Rosefeldt incorporates existing texts from literature, politics and pop culture in his installations, which include the successful Manifesto (2017), and brings these to life in a new context. For Euphoria, he uses texts from different people that include Donna Haraway, Karl Marx and Ayn Rand, each shining a different light on capitalism.
The Holland Festival will present a total of 34 productions with 109 performances, which include 9 world premieres and 10 Dutch premieres. The festival will take place from 3 through 26 June 2022. Tickets may be purchased through www.hollandfestival.nl.
