press release 27 November 2023

First performances for 2024 Holland Festival announced

On November 28th, the ticket sales will start for the first four performances of the 77th edition of the Holland Festival.

11.000 Saiten (“11,000 strings”) by composer Georg Friedrich Haas is a spectacular sound experience in Amsterdam’s Gashouder provided by fifty pianists and the Klangforum Wien ensemble. Choreographer Trajal Harrell returns to the festival with The Romeo, his latest large-scale dance performance. The Bird of a Thousand Voices is a musical and visual performance inspired by an Armenian folktale by Tigran Hamasyan, Ruben van Leer and Boris Acket. And the 2024’s associate artist, the Brazilian theatre director and filmmaker Christiane Jatahy, will present her Hamlet, a coproduction with L'Odéon - Théâtre de l'Europe in Paris. This is the first of Jatahy's contributions to the festival with her own work. She also contributes to the festival programming.

11.000 Saiten
Fifty pianos in a large circle in Amsterdam’s Gashouder form the basis for this composition of an at times ethereal beauty that swells into a thunderous roar at others. 11.000 Saiten by grandmaster Georg Friedrich Haas is a work for ensemble and fifty pianos that are each tuned a tiny bit differently.

The Romeo
Picture a single dance for everyone, inspired by an infinite number of ways the world might have been, and by a name everyone knows. Harrell’s The Romeo imagines this dance for people of all possible origins, genders and generations, and for any circumstance. Harrell, one of the leading choreographers of his generation, draws from a wide range of inspirations, from contemporary dance, vogue and ballroom culture, Japanese butoh and ancient Greek theatre to performance art.

The Bird of a Thousand Voices
An old Armenian folktale about the search for world harmony comes to life in a multi-media concert with a visual design that stirs the imagination. Tigran Hamasyan blends traditional music from his birth country Armenia into his compositions and improvisations. For The Bird of a Thousand Voices, he worked with singer Areni Agbabian and two innovative image makers from the Netherlands: director Ruben van Leer and visual artist and scenographer Boris Acket.

Hamlet
In Christiane Jatahy’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic, Hamlet, having been a model of male melancholy for four centuries, wakes as a grown woman who wants to correct her past. This new Hamlet finds herself confronted with violent power structures, without forgetting the violence she perpetrated herself in the past, and feels a deep desire to radically overthrow them: an exciting premiere by the 2024 Holland Festival’s associate artist, who often radically stages classics from the literary and theatrical canon in the present.

Tickets for these productions can be purchased starting 28 November 2023 via www.hollandfestival.nl. The full programme will be announced at the end of February 2024.

The 77th edition of the festival will take place from 6 through 29 June 2024.
