From Dust wins Immersive Competition at Film Festival Cannes

May 23, 2025

The VR opera installation From Dust by composer and director Michel van der Aa has won the Immerse Competition of the 78th edition of Film Festival Cannes!

From Dust takes visitors to a new dimension of immersive storytelling and personalised art. In this 24-minute experience, the boundaries between reality and identity, between audience and work of art, are blurred. Visitors enter a 360-degree installation space that responds to movements and touches and takes real-time shape with the help of AI control, so that each visitor has their own, unique opera experience.

The jury awarded the Best Immersive Work Award because it is a "creation that explores the potential of spatial computing and artificial intelligence to develop new forms of storytelling." The jury, chaired by French director Luc Jacquet, consisted of American director, musician and writer and regular Holland Festival guest Laurie Anderson, French author and performer Tania de Montaigne, British director, screenwriter and artist Martha Fiennes and Japanese video game maker Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

The Immersive Competition was held for the second time this year.
