Just van Bommel
Profile
Dutch performer Just van Bommel (they/she/he) is an emerging figure in the performing arts, creating interdisciplinary works that address urgent, contemporary questions. Exploring themes like gender, masculinity, and vulnerability, they craft deeply personal performances that zoom out to reflect on our modern world.
Van Bommel graduates from the Toneelacademie Maastricht in 2022. Their graduation show, 't Showtje, a co-creation with Emma van den Elshout, was selected by Via Rudolphi as one of the three performances for Het Debuut 2022.
In 2025, the theme of gender and how it influences our identity became an increasingly important part of their work, as seen in pieces like DEAR FRAIL MALE (Frascati Productions) on the fragility of masculinity and what men miss out on, TRANS- (Noorderzon Festival) which was an EDM DJ set and container performance on consciously not defining your identity through gender, and their role as an actor and co-writer in Pride & Prejudice (Theater Oostpool) on being vulnerable in a hostile world.
For DEAR FRAIL MALE, Van Bommel was nominated for the BNG Bank Theatre Prize for emerging artists in the performing arts. This summer, Van Bommel partners with actor and writer Lotte Laurens to present a new piece on the rise of rape culture at the BOSFEST festival. Since 2025 Van Bommel has partnered with pianist and visual artist Tomoko Mukaiyama on WE ARE THE HOUSE, an ongoing exploration into abortion, bodily autonomy, and the societal expectations placed on women.
