In the lead-up to his concert at the BIMHUIS on 18 June, Craig Taborn will take part in a short residency, collaborating with musicians from Amsterdam’s improvisation scene to develop new material. During The Sonic Connections of Craig Taborn at murmur (Amsterdam-Noord), you'll get a glimpse into his musical world through intimate listening sessions, a talk, and DJ sets inspired by his work. Presented in collaboration with Echobox Radio.
The evening is hosted by Joygail, known from Echobox and Joygail Radio. Not only does he set the tone with his music – blending warmth and groove from a wide range of genres, from funky house and bass to amapiano, always with a UK twist – he also acts as host and musical guide throughout the night.
At the heart of the evening is a conversation between Joygail, BIMHUIS programmer Shane Burmania, and drummer Sun-Mi Hong, who is collaborating with Taborn during the residency. Born in South Korea in 1990 and based in Amsterdam, Hong is praised for her energetic playing and distinctive style. Her music weaves together South Korean and European influences, exploring the space where they intersect.
The conversation will delve into the musical world of Craig Taborn: who he is, what defines his music, and what a residency at the BIMHUIS entails.
Following the talk, Sun-Mi Hong will present an improvised solo drum performance. The evening concludes with a DJ set by Jameszoo, inspired by Taborn’s work. Known for his innovative and experimental sound, Jameszoo draws inspiration from classic jazz and artists such as Arthur Verocai (who performed live at the Holland Festival in 2024).
