Masters of Movement offers a unique opportunity to see three leading choreographers of contemporary ballet share one stage. David Dawson, Krzysztof Pastor and Alexei Ratmansky come together in a programme brimming with dynamism, technical brilliance and emotional depth. Each of these passionate makers enriches the art form with a distinct choreographic voice.

British choreographer David Dawson created Empire Noir in 2015. In his own words, the work is 'about choreography, about dancers and how they relate to one another.' The result is an explosive ballet centred on the almost manic energy that can surface in dreams at night, a rollercoaster of virtuosity.

'Even more supple the dancers bend, even higher the legs whip, even sharper the pointe shoes pierce the air, even more elegantly the arms extend.'

Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor presents Refraction, a brand-new work for a large ensemble created especially for Het Nationale Opera & Ballet.

Both he and Dawson danced for Het Nationale Ballet for many years, where they created their first choreographies. They later served as resident choreographers before building international careers.

The third ballet in Masters of Movement marks the European premiere of Solitude by the world-renowned Russian-Ukrainian-American master choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. The work has not previously been seen in Europe. Het Nationale Opera & Ballet earlier presented his acclaimed production of Don Quichot as well as several contemporary works.
