This opera, brimming with political intrigue, love and betrayal, tells the story of Simon Boccanegra, who shortly after losing both his beloved and his daughter, is proclaimed leader of the politically fractured city of Genoa. A gripping operatic drama about power struggles, paternal love and treachery.

Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra centres on two themes: the bond between father and daughter, and the tension between duty and personal desire. These emotions resonate in deeply expressive vocal lines and an orchestral score marked by striking dramatic contrasts.

Composer Giuseppe Verdi paints a portrait of a father and statesman longing for peace and freedom. An outstanding cast has been assembled for this production, including baritone George Petean and soprano Federica Lombardi. Verdi specialist Fabio Luisi conducts the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest through the opera’s dramatic score. Together with the powerful choral scenes, this promises a compelling operatic experience.
