Trajal Harrell, one of today’s most influential choreographers, will enter into conversation with Thomas A P van Leeuwen, author of the book The Thinking Foot, during the Holland Festival.

Harrell rose to fame with his series Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church, in which he explores dance forms such as voguing, butoh, and postmodern dance and his own unique style. His work has been presented at venues including MoMA New York, the Festival d’Avignon, and Schauspielhaus Zürich. In 2025, he is associate artist of the Holland Festival.

Thomas A P van Leeuwen is a writer and cultural historian, renowned for his in-depth and vivid essays on architecture, urban planning, and the role of the human body in public space. In The Thinking Foot – A Pedestrian Study on Paving, he explores the meaning of paving stones, pedestrians, and ‘thinking feet’.

Don’t expect a classic Q&A, but rather a lively encounter between two thinkers who—each from their own discipline—share the same ground beneath their feet.

This talk replaces the previously announced conversation between Harrell and Stephen Galloway, which unfortunately cannot take place. Ticket holders for that event are warmly invited to attend this pop-up talk instead.
