Waiting for Miss Monroe – Holland Festival

Marilyn Monroe was the number one movie idol of the 1950’s and early 1960’s. To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of her death, composer Robin de Raaff, together with librettist Janine Brogt, wrote his second opera Waiting for Miss Monroe. Under talented, young director Lotte de Beer, three fictitious scenes are staged, in which Monroe is portrayed as an actress tormented by her fears, who shuts herself away from the outside world. We witness how she shares her feelings with a recording device, rather than with her psychiatrist. Her volatile behaviour on set and her confused manner at JFK’s birthday party gain significance in the light of her debilitating self-doubt. Finally, Marilyn, who was adored by millions, dies, lost and lonely, at the tender age of 36.
