Alain Platel, les ballets C de la B, Teatro Real Madrid

In these times of growing nationalism in Europe, Belgian choreographer/director Alain Platel stages a large-scale production in order to examine the ‘dangerous beauty’ of the masses. In a living tableau, the 150 strong choir and orchestra of the Madrid Teatro Real perform music of Verdi and Wagner. Opposite them, ten dancers of les ballets C de la B, who represent our individuality. Inspired by Jonathan Littell’s bestseller The Kindly Ones, the performance raises questions about the responsibility of the individual in the group and asks how we as 21st century spectators deal with the irresistible emotion that continues to speak from Wagner’s and Verdi’s choral works.
