What begins as a listening experience turns into a rave at the Muziekgebouw. To mark the 150th anniversary of composer Maurice Ravel, his world-famous Boléro is radically reimagined. New arrangements, a rediscovered 1929 jazz version and trance-driven electronic beats transform the piece into a pulsating blend of orchestra, jazz, electronica and techno.

The French collective Les Apaches! literally puts the “rave” in Ravel. Composer Fabien Cali weaves classical material with jazz and contemporary electronic rhythms, while immersive 3D projections by real-time visual artist Alexandra R. merge dancers with virtual landscapes. Within the same continuous live flow, we hear DJ Parrish Smith (who performed at HF x Lofi x CTM in 2022), this results in a layered audiovisual choreography in which image, music and movement intertwine.

RAVE-L is an adventurous, visually exuberant and rhythmically irresistible performance in which audience and musicians listen, move and celebrate together.

DJ Parrish Smith about the performance

'Orchestral music is a major source of inspiration for me as a film lover, storyteller, and artist working in experimental music. Because of this, it has always been a dream of mine to collaborate with an orchestra at a point in my life where I still have relatively little technical knowledge of it. I hope this will lead to surprising possibilities together with Les Apaches. My strength lies in taking risks, immersing myself in the unknown, and getting people to dance to something new that feels relevant to the present moment. That is also what I recognize in Les Apaches; I am deeply impressed by their compositional work and can’t wait to bring this collaboration to life.'
