Vertrouw nooit een trol (The Two Fiddlers)
Peter Maxwell Davies, Circle Ensemble, Hofstad Jeugd Orkest
The 1980 Holland Festival opened spectacularly with an afternoon performance for children (and their parents): the opera Never Trust a Troll (The Two Fiddlers) by composer Peter Maxwell Davies was also performed by children. The evening saw the second part of the opening with a remarkable experiment, Elly, or the Famous Play by Wim T. Schippers and Gied Jaspers, which was shown almost simultaneously at Carré and live on VPRO television, causing quite a stir. Wherever you were, you missed something on the opening night, such as the performance Dialog Curious George by Robert Wilson in Rotterdam.
On 22 June, the festival closed at the newly opened Muziekcentrum Vredenburg with a packed evening featuring a large number of ensembles from the festival. In the intervening weeks there was Grips Theatre for children, dance from all over the world—from masked Japanese dancers to Dutch dance innovator Pauline de Groot.

Welcome to the Holland Festival archive! The history of our festival dates back to 1947. Through the programs of each festival edition we aim to tell this history here. Currently our archive has been digitised from 1990 onwards, more history is to follow soon. Sadly some information is only available in Dutch but we aim to be as bilingual as possible.
