Departing director Adriaan ’s Gravesande did a lot for the Holland Festival, bringing in greater audiences, more subsidies and putting on a thrilling 1990 edition. The programme prominently featured German music, both the historical avant-garde and contemporary Neue Musik composers, while also showcasing less well-known names. No Stockhausen this time, but Helmut Lachenmann, Mauricio Kagel and many others. There was also German theatre, with texts and direction by Georg Tabori, and legendary Bernhard Marinetti’s first appearance in the Netherlands. Other German contributions included work by Pina Bausch and William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt. And there was percussion, lots and lots of percussion, from all over the world, for two days straight at Paradiso.
